How to Replace the Boom of an Excavator
As an excavator supplier with years of experience in the industry, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of proper maintenance and replacement of key components. One such critical part is the excavator boom. The boom is a large, sturdy arm that extends from the excavator’s body and is essential for digging, lifting, and moving materials. Over time, due to heavy use, wear and tear, or even accidents, the boom may need to be replaced. In this blog, I’ll guide you through the process of replacing the boom of an excavator. Excavator

Pre – replacement Preparations
Before you even think about starting the replacement process, there are several steps you need to take. First and foremost, safety should be your top priority. Make sure the excavator is parked on a flat, stable surface. Set the parking brake and turn off the engine. Remove the keys from the ignition to prevent any accidental starts.
Inspect the new boom thoroughly. Check for any visible damage, such as cracks or dents. Ensure that all the necessary parts are included, such as pins, bushings, and hydraulic hoses. You can also compare the dimensions of the new boom with the old one to make sure it is the correct fit.
Gather all the tools you’ll need for the replacement. These typically include a variety of wrenches, socket sets, hydraulic tools, a crane or other lifting equipment, and a torque wrench. It’s also a good idea to have a parts cleaner and some lubricant on hand.
Removing the Old Boom
The first step in replacing the boom is to disconnect the hydraulic hoses. These hoses are responsible for supplying hydraulic fluid to the boom’s cylinders, which allow it to move. Use a hydraulic hose removal tool to loosen the fittings and carefully remove the hoses. Be sure to cap the ends of the hoses to prevent dirt and debris from entering.
Next, you’ll need to remove the pins that connect the boom to the excavator’s body and the stick. These pins are usually large and can be quite tight. Use a hammer and punch or a hydraulic pin puller to remove them. Make sure to support the boom with the crane or other lifting equipment to prevent it from falling as you remove the pins.
Once the pins are removed, slowly lift the old boom using the crane. Make sure the lifting point is properly secured and that the boom is balanced. Carefully move the old boom away from the excavator and place it in a safe location.
Installing the New Boom
Before installing the new boom, it’s a good idea to clean the mating surfaces on the excavator’s body and the stick. This will ensure a proper fit and prevent any contaminants from causing premature wear. Apply a thin layer of lubricant to the pins and bushings to make installation easier.
Use the crane to lift the new boom into position. Align the holes in the boom with the holes in the excavator’s body and the stick. Lower the boom slowly until the holes are perfectly aligned. Insert the pins through the holes and secure them with the appropriate cotter pins or retaining rings. Make sure the pins are tightened to the manufacturer’s specifications using a torque wrench.
Reconnect the hydraulic hoses to the new boom. Be careful not to cross – thread the fittings. Use a torque wrench to tighten the fittings to the correct torque. Once the hoses are connected, bleed the air from the hydraulic system. This is a crucial step to ensure proper operation of the boom.
Post – installation Checks
After the new boom is installed, conduct a thorough inspection. Check all the connections, including the pins and hydraulic hoses, to make sure they are tight and secure. Look for any signs of leakage in the hydraulic system.
Start the excavator and test the boom’s movement. Move the boom up and down, left and right, and test its lifting capacity. Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations, which could indicate a problem. If you notice any issues, stop the operation immediately and investigate the cause.
